On Tuesday evening, April 23rd, Neolyfe founder Robbie Cochrane attended a House of Lords Summit focusing on the Future of Computer Games in Web2 and Web3.

Set up as a roundtable discussion with Baroness Uddin, the event featured speakers from a range of industries, including esports, blockchain, energy, academia and, of course, the metaverse.

Robbie outlined his experience in Web3 and the metaverse and also introduced the Neolyfe project. He explained how the team is resolving the many challenges inherent in the first wave of virtual worlds, and its focus on creating a more accessible and holistic metaverse experience, with gaming infused through every point of interaction.

Robbie also focused on the mutually beneficial relationship between the blockchain and decentralised gaming — how the development and success of one is very much dependent on the other.

Other highlights from the roundtable included:

  • Professor Yu Xiong — founding director of Surrey University’s Academy for Blockchain and Metaverse Applications and Chair of the Advisory Board of the UK’s All-Party Parliamentary Group on Metaverse and Web3. Professor Xiong discussed his team’s work at Surrey University which is one of the country’s largest AI teams with over 300 researchers
  • Vikram Seth — Head of Blockchain and Web3 for Shell. Vikram talked about the company’s use of digital twins and industrial metaverse for operational training, found to be cheaper and quicker than field training. He also discussed how Shell is using incentive design, popular in gaming, in the area of carbon credits
  • Ems — ex-rapper and founder of Moon Boi Studios. In discussing his open world cyber-fantasy RPG, Ems broke down the complexities of gamification by highlighting supermarket loyalty cards, digital billboarding and user engagement in the field of digital advertising

Following his appearance at the House of Lords, Robbie was featured on the Game Logic: Behind The Games podcast.

Robbie covered a range of topics in this 30 minute discussion, including a look at how crypto and blockchain technology will evolve within gaming over the next few years.

The current focus for blockchain games, particularly in the context of Neolyfe, is to shift away from a crypto emphasis towards simply making high quality games and experiences. Where crypto is involved, the technology will become more seamlessly integrated into the background, with gameplay front and centre.

Robbie also looked at the potential for more mainstream gamers — typically reluctant to dabble in blockchain gaming — to cross over with the emergence of new and better experiences.
